Interview with Joshjosh  and  Pherpher

by Roadrash

Weott, California -28 June 2001
Josh Briscoe and ChristoPHER Nicholson have been riding the dirt for several years now. Creating their own mini-dirtparks all throughout their home digs of southern Humboldt County, California. Building their own ramps and taking them to school, they even got P.E. credits for fanning! After many years bombing trails and sicking big air all over Humboldt County, the fellas decided it was time to see what the rest of the world was doing. So they got it together and made it to the First Annual Boulder City Breakdown and they came home with a second and a third, against a pretty sick buncha riders. A few months later found them competing at the First Annual Donner Downhill on their way to numerous awards and an eventual sponsorship with Terraboards and a few other great manufacturers.
On a cloudy thursday in June, just after a freak summer storm, I caught up with Josh and Pher, waitin' for the mud to dry for more fanning with their new Terraboard FL-117's.....

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR FL-117?
Pher:My FL-117 is the greatest board I've ridden so far.

WHY IS THAT?
Pher: I like the flex, the strength the light weight. The shock trucks.

JOSH, WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR FL-117?
Josh: Umm, it's a good wide board, it's seems to be the lightest mountainboard I've ridden,
the lightest, most like, durable, it's also got good tread on it, good traction.

WHAT OTHER BOARDS HAVE YOU RIDDEN TO COMPARE THE FL-117?
Pher: I' ve ridden MBS boards, NPD's, Earthboards, the Outback...

THE TRI-WHEEL?
Pher: Yea..

AND THE FOUR-WHEEL OUTBACK?
Pher: Naw, I haven't tried the four Wheel yet...

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TERRAIN TO RIDE IN?
Josh: All terrain.. (Big Laughs)

YOU PREFER RACING DOWNHILL, OR BIG AIR?
Josh: ..Big Air..
Pher: ..Big Air, Freestyle

YOU GUYS GOT ANY RAMPS?
Pher: We have two ramps and a landing. Not including the dirt-jumps we have.

WHAT KIND OF GAPS YOU GUYS DOING?
Pher: normally, 'bout ten to twelve feet,
Josh: I've cleared thirteen and a half feet......sortof a personal record...
Ed. note:Check out the 18 ft. gap !
WHERE YOU GUYS RIDE MOST OFTEN WHEN YOUR AT HOME?
Pher: The Trails..
Josh: The Trails..

WHERE IS THAT SPECIFCALLY?
Pher: Below Weott School, on Burlington Trail, in the Redwood State Forest.
(Humboldt Redwoods State Park)

SOME PEOPLE SAY THE STATE PARKS AREN'T TOO HAPPY ABOUT MOUNTAINBOARDERS..
WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON ALL THAT?
Josh: Damn near every day we see State park workers walk by, they're all down for it.

WHAT ABOUT RANGERS THOUGH, DO YOU SEE THEM?
Josh: Well, no, they are Rangers,
Pher: They're happy to see some thing else besides , doing drugs.
Josh: ya, vandalism, doin' drugs or something stupid, they like it [mountainboarding],
They think it's like, 'Whoa, really cool, you guys keep it up!'.
we tell 'em like all about our events and everything like that, and they're even more impressed.
They like , stand behind us, man, and besides, we use an old trail...

WHAT OTHER PLACES DO YOU RIDE AROUND HERE?
Pher: We like to go up to Eureka, at Ross Diehl's track, the sickest track around.
It's pretty much clay and redwood duff everywhere, so we get a nice soft ride.

YOU GUYS RIDE HARDWEHEELS TOO?
Pher: That's what we started out on! We started out on XT wheels, really short decks
with plastic clips.
Josh: (Laughs) i don't know, (More laughs) i kinda really, I gotta get a bigger setup.
Bigger wider trucks, bigger decks, kinda-like mountainboard trucks (mumbles...)and then
something about breaking Independent trucks and small XTreme decks...

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE FIRST ANNUAL DONNER DOWNHILL?
Pher: I.... had a good time, probably messed my hand up forever,, um, placed first
in the Big Air, I was really stoked, (Big grin)

AND YOU JOSH? DID YOU DO AS WELL AS YOU HOPED?
Josh: I wanted to do a little bit better, but.....

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WILL HAVE TO DO NEXT TIME?
Josh: jus' try a little harder, and just make sure my shit doesn't break!

YOUR SHIT??
Josh: my trucks, doesn't break on the frikkin jumps! i don't know. I don't
know how to keep that stuff from happenin' AGAIN.....

PHER, YOU GOT 1ST PLACE IN THE AMATEUR BIG AIR AND EVERYONE WAS LOOKIN' FOR
YOU TO TRY THE PRO CLASS, THINK YOU MIGHT AT THE WORLDS IN KRATKA?
Pher: Depends on.. who's at the competition.

OH, SO YOU'RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE COMPETITION EH?
Pher: Of course.

YOU THINK YOU CAN STICK THOSE SICK 540'S AGAIN LIKE AT DONNER?
Pher: (sarcastically) those are eeeaasy man! I can stick those on a rainy day..

JOSH, DID YOU STOP USING HEROIN TODAY OR YESTERDAY? {A joke folks!! Just a Joke! RR}
(Big surprised look from both riders as they loook at one another and start
cracking up)
Josh: What the F#@!$@$#!!!!!

RECENTLY, YOU GUYS GOT TO COMPETE AT DONNER AND PICKED UP A SPONSOR,
PHER, WOULD YOU CARE TO ELABORATE?
Pher: we got sponsored by Terraboards, the owner's name is George Winant,
with his wife Rebecca and his two lovely kids. And he's a really great guy, really into
what we're doing, he hopes that we keep on going as hard as we're going, so we can get somewhere
in the future. Maybe four or five years from now we'll be paid, sponsored riders, get big fat checks.

DID YOU CHOOSE TERRABOARD, OR DID THEY CHOOSE YOU?
Josh: We chose Terraboards because, like we said earlier, we like how fast they go and how well
they take the big air. they're also light [weight]... ya, a lot lighter than most other boards..
Pher: The MBS Grasshopper is a little bit lighter but it's ...
Josh: but it's got some funky-ass trucks
Pher: it makes your speed-wobble a little easier, on the MBS, sowe like the Terraboards for not
speed-wobbling.

SO WHAT'S YOUR NEXT EVENT?
Pher: hopefully, Mammoth Mountain. July 19-22nd..in Mammoth Calif.

YOU GUYS THINKIN' OF GOING TO KRATKA RIDGE AND THE WORLD CHAMPINOSHIPS?
Pher: fer sure!!!
Josh: Ya fersure!!!

PHER, DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT QUIVER:
Pher: I have a broken truck on an NPD board, I got an XT board with a broken Indie truck,
I got two Terraboards, FL-117's, one "Spike" and one "Logo". And I have a Maple Skateboard.
I have a river deck, I'm using for river jumps made by Republic Skateboards. using XT Wheelz
and Independent Trucks.

JOSH, YOUR QUIVER?
Josh: I've got an Xtreme Full Deck with Independent Trucks and I have one MBS Grasshopper and then one
FL-117 Terraboard.

SO LIKE, WHO'S YOUR MAIN SUPPORTERS?
Pher: We got Bruce Briscoe at Applecreek.com, Tsunami Surf & Sport. We got Dirtheads supportin us and
all the locals helping us where they can.

PHER, WHAT'S YOUR FAVE BIG AIR TRICK?
Pher: My fave trick is a 360 Stalefish or a 360 freshfish.

ARE YOU ABLE TO DO THOSE ON YOUR TERRABOARD?
Pher: yea I am, but it feels alot smoother, 'n bigger, and it feels a
little bit more tweaked out when I do it [as opposed to hardwheel XT's]..

JOSH, SOME FOLKS ARE CALLING YOU THE "METHODMANIAC",
ARE YOU LIVING UP TO THAT MONIKER?
Josh: Yep! one of my signature moves is my "Underside Method". Where you go to grab Method,
you grab the other side of the board, the opposite edge, grab with the leading hand..

CURRENTLY WHO SPONSOR'S YOU?
Pher: I'm sponsored by Dirtheads, Dakine, Skeletools, 661, Ironclad and Terraboards.
Josh: same here..

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR BOARDING CAREER(S) TO GO FROM HERE?
Josh: All the way to the Pro level. I want it to be a bigger industry to where riders
are getting paid and people can get into it easy and if your really try hard that you're
able to get sponsored by big companies, just like, just like any other sport. I want it to
get big enough to where it's very popular, you see it on TV.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN MOUNTAINBOARDING SAY,
 FIVE YEARS FROM NOW?
Josh: mmm, near the top....

NOT AT?
Josh: .....I'll be there at the top for awhile but, there's some damn good riders out there!
I know that..

AND YOU PHER, SAME QUESTION?
Pher: I see myself being one of the top two (grinning with a slight snicker) and uh, I think
five years after that I'll probably be known as the Tony Hawke of Mountainboarding,, I'm hopin'!
'cause the sport's fairly new, and I'm fairly good! (He smiles big!)

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS??
Josh: Dirtboards for Life!!
Pher: um, um, um...............................

we share a big laugh and then it was time to go eat some dirt....
